The Music Academy Make-Up Policy The Music Academy will recognize only ONE excused absence (for private lessons only) in the fall and spring semesters as eligible to be made up. This one absence is not intended to give students the right to miss any lessons. To qualify as an excused absence, your private instructor or The Music Academy must be notified of the absence at least (4) hours prior to the scheduled time on the day of the lesson. Absences should be due to illness, business, or pre-arranged school conflict. There are no excused absences for missed group lessons. Teacher Absence All lessons missed due to the teacher’s absence are to be made up. School Closing Lesson/classes missed due to an emergency school closing will be made up. In the event of campus closure, class, or event cancellation due to weather, there will be a broadcast message that can be reached by calling our number 815-986-0037, it will be posted on our website, www.MusicAcademyInRockford.com, and it will be on the local Television Stations and their websites. Make-Up Lessons One week is built into the fall and spring semester calendar to give students and teachers the opportunity to schedule make-up lessons. Teachers will offer two alternative dates to fulfill their obligations to students for excused absences. Should the student decline both offers, the lesson is considered unexcused. Teachers are expected to inform the student after two reasonable alternatives are declined that they will forfeit the lesson and not receive a credit. Unfortunately, our historic building is not physically accessible to the second floor or the basement. We make every attempt to use only accessible performance spaces but occasionally have to make use of these floors. If you need an accessible lesson or performance space, do not hesitate to let your teacher or the office staff know - we can and will accommodate - and apologize for you even having to ask. Prior to her work in Rockford, she founded Suzuki Strings of Manhattan where she ran a Suzuki Program, Summer Chamber Music Camp and conducted the local youth Orchestra. Additional past experience includes serving as Chair of the Strings Division for the Community School for the Performing Arts at Kansas State University and teaching with El Sistema Colorado which serves primarily disadvantaged students in the Denver Area. Laura received her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder where she served as Erika Eckert’s teaching assistant and studied chamber music with members of the Takacs Quartet. Her doctoral thesis, Teaching the Violin with Purpose: strategies designed to foster musical, cognitive, and social development in low-income students, has been a resource for El Sistema sites, and has been adapted to suit the Suzuki philosophy in articles and pedagogy workshops. An avid freelance and chamber musician, Laura has performed throughout the United States and internationally. As a chamber musician, Dr. Eakman has collaborated with the assistant concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, Michelle Kim, as well as renowned soloist, Elizabeth Pitcairn. She has worked with the Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane Dance Company, performed with new music ensembles in Colorado, and was a founding member of the Avant Duo, Kylian Quartet, and Camus Quartet which toured the Netherlands in 2009. She began violin studies at age 5, and later became a Suzuki violin student with Rachel Handlin at the Music Academy, of which she is a proud alumni. She also studied classical voice with Beth Frederickson for 6 years. Throughout the years, Lillian has been involved in many musical events and trainings. She attended both St. Olaf’s Summer Piano Academy and Indiana University’s Piano Academy. She has accompanied for her school choir, played in the Music Academy’s Measure 5 String Ensemble, won the Jean Coppeletti “Joy and Inspiration” award for voice, and taken classes in collaborative piano. She also attended the Montecito International Music Festival in 2016 for piano. Lillian has recently completed her Suzuki Piano Book 1 training. She is passionate about helping children grow and develop their full potential through music. She hopes music will be a lifelong source of love and joy for all her students. She has been teacher and clinician for the Kankakee Valley Piano Camp, the Green Mountain Suzuki Institute in Vermont, the Columbia Talent Education Association in Missouri, Blue Lake Suzuki Institute in Michigan, MacPhail Suzuki Institute in Minneapolis and the Suzuki program at northern Illinois University. She was invited to be a session present at the 2010 and 2012 Suzuki Conferences in Minneapolis. Her first piano teacher for many years was her father, Bruce Headlee. Her articles have been published in Keyboard Companion Magazine, Clavier Companion Magazine, The Suzuki Journal (a tribute to her father and other articles) and American Music Teacher Magazine. Anne shares a home with her husband, Charles Olson, and her granddaughter Isabelle, a Suzuki cellist. Brandon received his Bachelor's of Music Education from Northern Illinois University in 2007, studying under Ann Montzka-Smelser, and taught public school orchestra and strings in Rockford and his alma mater Freeport High School for ten years. With Suzuki teacher training on violin, he began teaching at the Music Academy in 2017, where he takes students on violin and viola, and directs the Vivaldi orchestra and other group classes. He plays regularly with the Rockford Symphony and other ensembles in the area, directs the Highland Community College Orchestra, and runs an instrument supply and repair shop. For four years she taught general music for pre-K through middle school at Spectrum School here in Rockford, where she started the area’s first Music Together© Licensed Preschool Program. At the Music Academy of Rockford College she teaches early childhood music and recently launched a music program at the Rosecrance adolescent treatment center. She is a regular contributor to the newsletter of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association regarding the Achievement in Music Exams. Candy's Orff training is from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota. Candy teaches Orff as a part of the piano group class curriculum, and is an occasional accompanist for the string program. She also teaches early childhood classes in the Music Academy’s Prelude program as well as the City of Rockford Head Start Program. Candy is a trained Music Together early childhood teacher. Kerena also received an Associate of the Royal College of Music in London England for post- graduate solo studies and a Graduate Performance Diploma from Peabody Conservatory of Music. Kerena previously served as a faculty member of the Maryland Conservatory of Music and at the Levine School of Music in Washington, D.C. Kerena is an active member of the Moeller Cello and Guitar Duo with her husband, guitarist Paul Moeller. Together, they have concertized throughout the United States, England and Italy. Their new recording, “My Better Half” features cello and guitar duets ranging from Baroque to Blues. She studied at Valley City State University in North Dakota with Dr. Eugene Alcalay and Dr. Elaina Burns at the University of Wisconsin – Platteville. Ella performed multiple times in the UW Platteville Honors Recital, won the Senior Piano division of the Chandler Star Miller Scholarship Competition in 2013 and won the University of Wisconsin-PlattevilleConcerto/Aria Competition in 2012 performing Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major (first movement) with the UW-Platteville Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Thomas Dickey in 2013. Ella also plays viola, has taken lessons from Hui Wang at The Music Academy, and is currently studying with Brandon Lamm. Ella has played in the UW-Platteville Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Northern Illinois, the Rock Valley College Orchestra, and ensembles in the Rockford area. She helped start and run the Northern Illinois Christian Youth Orchestra with her family, currently in its 8th season. The Music Academy has been instrumental in developing musical skills and gifts in the Caswell family, and Ella is excited to be able to give back and be a part of the Music Academy’s mission! As an undergraduate David studied violin, played in area orchestras, and received Suzuki training. He has taught guitar for over 30 years at area schools such as Rock Valley College, Rockford University, and Beloit College. David has judged competitions for the Illinois Guitar League in Peoria and Rochelle. In small ensembles and as soloist, David has played classical guitar at weddings, churches, and receptions. She is currently the music teacher at Montessori Private Academy through a Music Academy partner program and teaches Suzuki violin at the academy. As an alumni of the Music Academy it is a joy to be able to join in the training of the next generation of musicians. Shannon is active in music in the community through performing in community ensembles, accompanying throughout the area, and as a church musician. She has taught private voice and piano lessons for the past 16 years, in Illinois and in New York City. Lauren has a background in traditional piano instruction, including improvisation and accompaniment. She is also a classically trained vocalist with experience in musical theater. She credits years of lessons with quality voice, piano and harp teachers as giving her inspiration as a music teacher. She is always looking for ways for students to connect with one another and improve their communities through music. She founded and directs the Belvidere Youth Chorus. She loves to help students to learn good vocal technique and grow in their confidence as a performer. She also served as a dean and directed a Teaching with Primary Sources grant from the Library of Congress. When The Music Academy was located at Rockford College, she taught piano there for three years. Dr. Deb always has been an active musician. She attended West Virginia University where she majored in music education, with piano as her primary instrument. Following graduation, she returned to the Maryland Eastern Shore where she taught K-8 music and earned a master’s degree from Salisbury State University with a music and piano pedagogy emphasis. During this period, she operated a private piano studio, accompanied for various churches and musicals, directed a children’s choir, and sang in choral groups. She was active in the Eastern Shore Association of Piano Teachers and attended a number of pedagogy sessions at the Peabody Institute of the John Hopkins University. In addition, she was a judge for the National Guild of Piano Teachers. She then relocated to Carbondale, Illinois, where she earned a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Southern Illinois University. During that time, she taught piano ensemble for summer school camps and directed a childrens choir. One highlight of her time in Carbondale was performing in a monster concert with 10 pianos directed by Donald Beattie, music Professor Emeritus at SIUC. Dr. Deb is excited to resume her piano teaching career at The Music Academy in Rockford. The piano has always been her first love, and her primary goal is to instill and enhance a love of music in her students. He later attended the State University of New York at Fredonia as a student of Phyllis East. While there, he earned the Performer’s Certificate, was winner of the annual Concerto Competition, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. Mr. Newman then continued his studies at the University of Michigan as a student of Theodore Lettvin, but left after only one year when he received a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England. Being the first American B.P. Scholar to be accepted to the Guildhall, he garnered its highest performing honor, the Concert Recital Diploma (Premier Prix), in addition to earning the Advanced Solo Studies Diploma while studying with Edith Vogel and Joan Havill (herself a former student of Nadia Boulanger). Upon his return to the U.S., David renewed his studies with Mr. Lettvin, this time at Rutgers University graduating with a Master of Music degree in piano performance. As a teaching assistant at Rutgers, David taught piano to undergraduates, was staff accompanist in the studio of Bernard Greenhouse (of the Beaux Arts Trio), and was pianist for the Princeton Ballet Theater. He also served as organist and pianist for the school’s student ministries, as well as teaching piano and music appreciation classes at neighboring community colleges. Moving to Chicago, Mr. Newman quickly became a musician much in demand for a variety of projects including recordings for the Steppenwolf Theater Company’s production of Another Time, starring Albert Finney, and could frequently be heard on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, broadcast live on WFMT. He served as staff accompanist in the studios of Robert Marcellus, Larry Combs, and other members of the Chicago Symphony, and could be heard in nearly every major venue in the city including the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, DePaul University, the Chicago Cultural Center, and many others. He has served on the faculties of St. Xavier University and the Merit Music Program (a subsidized music education program for innercity children) as well as an adjudicator for numerous piano competition festivals. Mr. Newman also served as Music Director at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Evanston, Illinois for many years. Now a resident of Beloit, Wisconsin, David is an active soloist and chamber musician throughout the state. Since arriving in 2008, Mr. Newman has had the pleasure of performing a number of concertos with many local orchestras, including the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra (Rhapsody in Blue), the Beloit College Orchestra (Liszt E-flat Concerto), Lake Geneva (this time with conductor David Anderson) (Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 2), and the Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra (a reprise of Rhapsody in Blue). Since coming to Wisconsin, Mr. Newman has presented countless solo recitals and chamber recitals. He has been asked to adjudicate numerous piano competitions. He founded the chamber ensemble Zephyr which focuses on music written for piano and winds. He joined the faculty of the Music Academy in 2022. Two-time recipient of a grant from the French Government, Jacques Saint-Cyr studied flute in Paris with Raymond Guiot and the baroque flute with Jean-Christoph Frish. Jacques Saint-Cyr has performed in France, Canada and United States. Jacques joined the Rockford community in 2003. In 1997, Jacques and Maria E Castello created “It takes Three to Tango”, a stage production with dance and live music based on the history of Argentine Tango. This production has been presented in many cities in Canada and the United States. Jacques is on the faculty at the Music Academy in Rockford, Rockford College and Rock Valley College. He performed and programmed many concerts for the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center. He played as a freelance musician with many ensembles and choir in Rockford: Trinity Lutheran Church, Unitarian Universalist Church Choir, Kantorei, Second Congregational United Church of Christ and First Free Church. My family held a strong belief that music was an integral part of a well rounded childhood education. Through the elementary school orchestra program in Vestal NY, I was introduced to strings and was drawn to the sound of the cello. I was enrolled in a Suzuki Program taught by Miriam Wu and immediately preferred the group activity aspect presented both in school orchestra and cello studies over the more solitary piano lessons. I discovered that while making music by oneself is fun, as a group it's fantastic! I spent several summers attending Suzuki Programs in Ithaca, joined the Binghamton Youth Symphony and participated in several NY state music activities such as NYSSMA and all-county/all-state orchestra festivals. At age 13, I moved to Seattle where I continued my studies with Marjorie Parkington and joined the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. Through the Youth Symphony, I was introduced to several professional musicians as sectional and chamber music coaches, and it was there that my love of music matured. After a crash course in cello and professional practice techniques with the principal cellist of the Seattle Symphony, I completed a Bachelors of Music Performance at the University of Washington with Rajan Krishnaswami, a Master of Music Performance at Boston University with Andres Diaz, and continued my instruction with Michael Reynolds, Leslie Parnas, and Rhonda Rider in Boston. In addition, I studied string pedagogy with Toby Saks in Seattle and Bonnie Black in Boston. While in Boston, I also worked with the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras as a chamber coach and taught group cello lessons through their Intensive Community Program. I taught private lessons to students grade 6 through 12 through the Norwood and Brookline School Districts and to several adult beginners on an individual basis. Through this I attended several chamber and orchestral festivals, including the Musicorda and Roundtop Music Festivals. In 2005 I left Boston for the midwest, and for 2 years I held a private studio in Madison Wisconsin. I also worked with chamber groups from the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras and performed with various regional orchestras in the area, including the Madison, Rockford, La Crosse and Dubuque Symphonies. For the last 7 years, I have taught on the faculty of the Music Academy in Rockford , while at the same time completing teacher training courses in all 10 of the Suzuki cello books. I also became a founding member of the Jane Addams Piano Trio, with whom I have given several chamber music recitals throughout Rockford. I now also teach private lessons through Maine South High School in Park Ridge and I coach chamber music through the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestras. She has been a Suzuki cello teacher for 30 years. Marti was introduced to the Suzuki Method in 1980 when she began her sons on violin with one of this country’s earliest Suzuki trained violin teachers. Eleanor Stanlis. Alongside Mrs. Stanlis, Marti established a Suzuki school in 1985 that evolved into a community school of music offering Suzuki piano, violin, viola, cello, guitar, harp and flute hiring highly qualified teachers in each area. As director Marti organized and administrated all programs of the school which now also include Prelude: Early Childhood Music Education programs, traditional instrumental and voice programs, and Engaging Encore Talent (creative aging) programs. Maintaining rich an varied music education programs and communicating with parents were high priorities. Marti and husband, Lyle, raised their two sons in Suzuki Talent Education. Rachel performs with various groups in the Chicago/Milwaukee/Rockford areas, and her violin students have been selected by audition to join the Advanced Violin Ensemble and Violin Masterclass for the National Biennial Suzuki Conferences in Minneapolis, MN. Rachel has traveled with Music Academy students to Japan, Minneapolis, San Antonio, the Grand Canyon, Alaska, and Iceland where the students also performed. Earning his Bachelor of Music in Theory and History at UW-Whitewater Don was a saxophone student of Dr. John Webb and also studied clarinet with Dr. Christian Ellenwood. At DePaul University in Chicago Don completed his Masters degree in Saxophone performance having the privilege to study with saxophone great Mark Colby and multi-instrumentalist Peter Ballin. In addition to being on staff as an Adjunct Instructor at Rock Valley College, Don has been teaching individual lessons for the last 20 years. His students are regulars in local IMEA district and state bands. She is a graduate of Illinois State University (her home town) and masters recipient in Music Education from Northern Illinois University. She was the 2020 recipient of the Rockford Symphony Music Educator. Currently she is enjoying being a supervisor for student music teachers of NIU. She has been married to Kevin Jensen for 44 years, has 3 grown children (Amanda, Dan and Ryan) and adores her 5 grandchildren Ian, Mia, Connor, Liam and Levi. She is involved in her church’s choir, bells and contemporary worship team. Amy loves participating in community theater at Starlight Theater and gathering with friends for dinner, shopping, lake visits. She loves traveling, biking, playing piano, singing, swimming, gardening, walking and pilates.
