Play It Again! Music Instruction and Classes for Adults

According to a 2003 Gallup Poll, 31 percent of American kids, ages five to 17, play an instrument, but a whopping 42 percent of people between ages 35 and 50 also play, and the numbers for all age groups are on the rise (Walker, “It’s Never Too Late” Strings Next: Focus on Adult Amateur String Players, May 2007.) Perhaps it is time for you to join us! Expand your horizons, meet new people, learn new skills or put polish back on some old skills, and have fun! The Music Academy is committed to helping adults realize their creative potential. Did you know that Verdi composed “Falstaff” at the age of 80? There is, in fact, a vital relationship between creative expression and quality of life. A recent study by Dr. Gene Cohen at George Washington University reveals strikingly positive differences in the social and physical health of older adults who participate in professionally conducted arts and cultural programs. Adults of any age can enrich their lives through creating beauty with music and sharing that gift with other like-minded adults.

There are many reasons to start or to keep on playing. For many adult students music lessons provide a creative outlet and a way to put aside, for just a few hours a week, day-to-day worries. For some, it is “unfinished business” from their childhood. For some, they can spend a week at their corporate jobs without feeling they have made the world better. But, they tell us, “when I’m making music with my friends, we know we’ve made something lovely. That’s reason enough to keep on playing!”
At The Music Academy we especially appreciate the unique perspectives, the world experience, and the opportunity to meet the expectations of our adult students. We enjoy sharing the intellectual and emotional fruits of our labor with one another!
Have you ever had the pleasure of playing chamber music? Would you like to know more about the music you hear everyday? Is there a musical instrument you’ve always wanted to learn how to play? Enroll in one of The Music Academy’s programs for adults and let us help you fulfill you artistic ambitions. Our programs include Chamber Music for Adults and Individual Instruction on piano, violin, viola, cello, guitar, flute, clarinet, saxophone, harp and voice.

What does seem clear is that if you take the plunge, you’ll have plenty of adult company. Welcome!

Chamber Music for Adults
Enjoy playing chamber music with a small group of other adults, coached by a member of The Music Academy faculty. This is a fun way to renew and expand your skills. Grouped by instrumentation and skill level, each class meets for one hour a week for the first seven weeks of each semester. At the end of the session, your group will get a chance to perform in an informal setting.

Traditional Individual Instruction
Learn to play a completely new instrument or revisit an old friend! The Music Academy offers expert individual instruction and performance opportunities.
